The Shiv Chalisa is a beautiful ode dedicated to Lord Shiva.It describes him as an omnipotent God,who grants the desired wishes to His devotees, and is always benevolent and merciful. It portrays Him as one who drank poison to save the Universe, wears a tiger skin, holds the Ganga in His matted hair, a half-moon on His forehead, smeared with ash from the cremation ground, and holds a trident. This ode is derived from the Shiv Purana which was composed by Ayodhya Das. Each of the 18 Puranas compiled by Maharishi Ved Vyas also finds mention of the glory of Lord Shiva.
