Ashokamitran (b. 1931 as Jagadisa Thagarajan) is a distinguished Tamil novelist and short story writer renowned for his use of subtle satire and undercurrents of sharp humour, dealing with the life of what’s generally called the lower rungs of society. Many feel his depiction of life in Secunderabad (his birth place) and Chennai (his Karmabhoomi) is unparalled. Author of eight novels, 15 novellas and more than 200 short stories. ‘Happy New Gear’ was authored in the mid-1960s.
